A Brief History of E-Cigarettes

A Brief History of E-Cigarettes
An electronic cigarette is also known as e-cigarette, personal vaporizer, or simply PV. Basically, an e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that turns liquid nicotine into a vapor. This vapor is then inhaled by the user.

E-cigarettes are even made to look like real cigarettes, and some of these cigarettes have a light at the end, which glows when the user inhales.

As far as the history of e-cigarettes is concerned, it is hard to find a definite narrative with a fixed chain of events.

This is because even though the first patent for smokeless devices was filed back in the 1960s, it was not until 2007 that American customers first got their hands on it.

Nevertheless, here is a brief history of e-cigarettes that will give some perspective when I discuss this device in detail in later chapters.

Herbert A. Gilbert was the first person to file a patent for smokeless cigarettes back in 1963. However, as with many inventions in human history, Gilbert’s work did not receive any widespread attention among his contemporaries.

Jump 4 decades forward and China releases the first batch of smokeless cigarettes. Pharmacist Han Lik is credited with this innovation, who was inspired to create the e-cigarette after his father died of a heart attack. It must be mentioned here that even Gilbert foresaw the dangers of tobacco smoking.

In 2006-2007, American and European customers started using the e-cigarette, and it was not long afterwards that this smoking device became a subject of debate. In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) refused to acknowledge electronic cigarettes as an aid to cure smoking addiction.

A study from New Zealand came out in the same year stating that there were no chemicals considered toxic found in e-cigarettes. However, bans were imposed on e-cigarettes in Australia and Canada.

The FDA followed suit in America, but the Electronic Cigarette Association (a group of e-cigarette manufacturers) began to fight a legal battle to revoke the ban.
